Three things called AI traffic, and only one you can count
Web traffic — the sessions arriving at a site — splits into three distinct things once AI answers are involved, and almost every confused claim in this subject comes from quoting a figure about one of them as though it described another.
- AI referrals. Someone clicks a link inside an assistant's answer and arrives carrying a referrer. Measurable in ordinary analytics by referrer host, and in ChatGPT's case by a documented UTM parameter as well.
- Clicks inside Google. A click from an AI Overview or from AI Mode arrives with a
google.comreferrer and is indistinguishable from ordinary organic. Google counts those clicks and pools them into the Web search type with no filter. Not separable, in your analytics or in Google's own reporting. - AI-influenced visits. The answer names you without linking you, and the reader searches your brand or types your domain. This lands in direct or branded organic search. There is no referral event to lose, because none was created.
The consequence deserves stating flatly, because it inverts what most dashboards imply. Anything labeled "AI traffic" in your analytics is almost entirely assistants — and assistants are the smaller surface. The larger one, Google's, contributes nothing to that number and never has.
How small it is, and how fast it is growing
The largest published sample is SE Ranking's, drawn from aggregated Google Analytics data across 101,574 websites in 250 countries over sixteen months to April 2026. AI referrals were 0.02% of total web traffic in 2024, 0.24% in 2025 and 0.32% in 2026 — a sixteen-fold rise that still leaves the channel under a third of one per cent. Regionally, the United States sat at 0.29%, the European Union at 0.27% and the United Kingdom at 0.16%.
Within that slice, ChatGPT took 74.78% of AI referrals in 2026, Gemini 11.56%, Perplexity 7.23%, Copilot 3.51% and Claude 2.62%. Year-on-year growth ran the other way round: Claude 320%, Gemini 231%, Copilot 31%, ChatGPT 27%. ChatGPT's share fell from 79.74% while its absolute volume grew — share and volume moving in opposite directions is the single most misreported pattern in this data, and both statements are true.
Adobe Analytics' retail series shows the same shape at higher amplitude: AI-sourced traffic up 1,300% year over year in the 2024 holiday period, 1,100% in January 2025, 3,100% in April 2025 and 4,700% in July 2025. Adobe has never published the absolute share those growth rates apply to, which is precisely what would make them interpretable. A growth rate without a base is a headline, not a finding.
Both halves of this belong in any honest report. Quoting sixteen-fold growth without the 0.32% misleads by omission; quoting 0.32% as proof the channel is irrelevant ignores a sixteen-fold move in two years. The panel is also self-selected — sites that install a rank-tracking vendor's analytics integration skew toward search-aware businesses.
The qualification filter that explains most of the difference
This is the mechanism behind nearly every engagement and conversion finding below, and it is almost never stated in the reports that publish them.
To arrive from an AI assistant, a person must have asked a question, read a synthesized answer, decided that answer was insufficient, and then chosen your link specifically out of a handful on offer. That is a far heavier filter than clicking the first blue link on a results page. Anyone who clears all four steps is further down a decision path by construction, before your site has done anything at all.
So the observed differences in bounce rate, session length and conversion are consistent with selection and do not demonstrate that the channel is better. The visitors are different people in a different state of mind, not the same visitors behaving better because they came from a different place. No published study controls for this, and the distinction has a practical edge: if the effect is selection, then increasing AI referral volume moves you down the quality curve rather than multiplying the good behavior. Say this whenever you quote a multiplier, because the multiplier is worthless without it.
It lands somewhere else, and that breaks your reporting
AI-referred sessions do not enter a site where organic sessions enter it. SE Ranking's July 2026 analysis found 60% of AI-referred traffic landing on homepages, against 17% from organic search. That is consistent with brand-level rather than page-level recommendation, and it has an immediate consequence: landing-page analysis of AI traffic concentrates on the homepage and will tell you almost nothing about which content earned the recommendation in the first place.
The corresponding fact on the visibility side is that your rank for a query says very little about your citation probability for it. Semrush, working across more than 500 digital-marketing topics in July 2025, found roughly 90% of ChatGPT-referenced pages ranking at position 21 or lower for related queries. Ahrefs, testing 15,000 long-tail queries across six engines in August 2025, found only 12% of AI-cited URLs also appearing in Google's top ten for the same query — ChatGPT at 8.0% for in-text citations and 6.1% for reference citations, Perplexity highest at 28.6%. Two vendors, different methods, same direction.
The mechanism joining these two observations is query fan-out: the assistant answers sub-questions the user never typed, so the page it cites ranks for something else, and the person who follows the link often arrives at a brand rather than at that page. A report that tries to attribute AI referrals to the ranking keywords of the landing pages they hit is joining two things that were never connected.
Engagement replicates. Conversion contradicts.
On engagement the evidence is about as good as this field gets. SE Ranking's 101,574-site panel found AI visitors spending 67.7% more time on site than organic visitors — nine minutes nineteen seconds against five minutes thirty-three. Adobe Analytics, across more than a trillion US retail visits in August 2025, found AI-referred visits 32% longer, viewing 10% more pages, with a 27% lower bounce rate. Two panels, two industries, two vendors, the same direction. The magnitudes differ by roughly a factor of two, which is what different panels and denominators produce. Quote the direction confidently and the magnitude as a range.
On conversion the literature does not agree with itself, and this is where most commercial material reports one half of it.
- Semrush, July 2025: an AI search visitor is 4.4 times as valuable as an organic one. The post publishes the ratio but neither of the two rates it is a ratio of, does not state how many sites contributed conversion data, covers a narrow topic set, and labels its projections extrapolations. A multiplier without its components cannot be checked or applied to your own baseline.
- Ahrefs, June 2025: on ahrefs.com alone, AI search visitors were 0.5% of traffic and 12.1% of signups over thirty days — reported as a 23-times conversion rate, with 50% more pages per visit. The authors state it is one site. That site sells search software to exactly the audience most likely to be experimenting with AI search. They also flag the countervailing fact that AI search users click links 75% less than traditional organic searchers.
- Adobe, August 2025: across the same trillion-plus retail visits, AI-referred traffic was 23% less likely to convert than non-AI traffic in July 2025 — an improvement on 49% less in January 2025 and 38% in April. Revenue per visit ran 27% lower, up from 97% lower a year earlier.
The largest sample in the conversion debate points the opposite way from the two figures the industry quotes. Both can be true in their own verticals: a business-software signup is a low-friction, research-heavy conversion for which a well-informed visitor is ideal, while a retail purchase is high-friction and AI-referred shoppers are early-stage researchers. Neither generalizes. Citing 4.4 times or 23 times without Adobe's minus 23% is reporting half a literature.
The direct-traffic gap: a real mechanism with no measured size
A large and unknown share of AI-influenced visits arrive with neither a referrer nor a UTM parameter and land in analytics as direct traffic. Five mechanisms produce that, listed in rough order of how much they probably explain — though the ordering is inference, since no study decomposes the loss:
- The brand was named, not linked. The answer recommends you and the reader goes looking. This is not a broken referrer; it is a visit with no referrer to break, and it is plausibly the largest component, because it is exactly the outcome AI answers are designed to produce.
- Native apps. Links opened from an assistant's mobile or desktop application commonly arrive with no referrer header at all. A UTM parameter survives this where one is present.
- Referrer policy. A restrictive policy suppresses the header when a reader follows a link outward, and operators change this without notice.
- Copy and paste. URLs get copied out of answers and pasted into messages and email.
- Cross-device and delayed action. Read on a phone, acted on three days later from a laptop.
Now the part that most coverage skips. The magnitude of this gap has never been measured. No study located as of August 2026 quantifies the leakage rate for AI referrals with a published method. The one quantified estimate in circulation is a consultant's, from a dataset of more than 100 brands with undisclosed methodology, putting true Claude-influenced visits at roughly two to three times measured referrals. That is the best available figure and it is not good enough to plan on.
This matters more than it looks, because "most AI traffic shows up as direct" is the sentence used to explain away every disappointing AI referral number, and used that way it is unfalsifiable. The one figure that would size the gap — what share of an operator's outbound clicks carry a referrer — has never been published by any operator, and OpenAI's utm_source=chatgpt.com remains the only publisher-facing attribution commitment any of them has made. Report the mechanisms confidently. Report the size as unmeasured, in those words.
What you can honestly put in a report
Every AI referral figure you produce is a floor of unknown tightness, and three properties should sit beside it on the page rather than in a footnote.
It excludes Google's AI surfaces entirely. For most sites that is the majority of AI exposure. Do not compute an AI Overview click-through rate from Search Console either: the generative AI report carries impressions and no clicks, so the division is undefined, and its impressions are a subset already inside the Web total rather than a separate channel to compare against.
It rests on conventions nobody promised. Copilot's referrer has been observed since March 2024 and was never announced by Microsoft. Claude's referral path form comes from consultant research. Gemini, Perplexity and the rest are hostname conventions that any operator can change silently. Build the segment on referrer host and UTM prefix together, enumerate the hostnames explicitly rather than pattern-matching on ".ai" — which catches an entire country-code namespace while missing chatgpt.com — and audit it on a schedule, because it will break without warning.
No first-party reporting is coming to rescue it. No assistant publishes impressions, clicks, click-through rates or query data to publishers. Microsoft's AI Performance report gives citation counts and contains no traffic metric at all. The commercial relationship between publishers and these operators has been contested in court rather than settled in documentation — News Corp brought a claim against Perplexity in October 2024, and Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun brought their own in Japan in August 2025 — which is not an environment in which voluntary publisher analytics tends to appear.
The defensible version of an AI traffic report is therefore narrow and says so: a named set of referrer hosts, a stated date range, absolute sessions rather than only growth rates, a note that Google's surfaces are excluded by construction, and no conversion multiplier quoted without the study that contradicts it.
